The Problem
Your Gas or Electric Fireplace won’t turn on
Power, gas, or control issues
Electric fireplaces may lose power due to a tripped breaker, faulty outlet, or remote control problems, while gas fireplaces often fail to ignite if the gas supply valve is closed or the wall switch, remote, or thermostat isn’t communicating properly.
Safety sensors or pilot system problems
Electric fireplaces may lose power due to a tripped breaker, faulty outlet, or remote control problems, while gas fireplaces often fail to ignite if the gas supply valve is closed or the wall switch, remote, or thermostat isn’t communicating properly.
Maintenance and airflow issues
Dust buildup, blocked vents, or neglected maintenance can stop both gas and electric fireplaces from operating correctly. Regular inspection and cleaning help ensure reliable startup and safe performance.
What you can do before calling for help
If you smell gas, immediately call your gas company and let them know.
Verify Power or Gas Supply
For electric fireplaces, confirm the outlet works and check the breaker. For gas fireplaces, make sure the gas shutoff valve is fully open.
Look for safety shutoffs
Some units won’t turn on if the glass front is loose or not seated properly. Make sure any safety screens or access panels are fully secured.
Check the Controls
Replace batteries in the remote or wall switch. Make sure the thermostat or wall control is set correctly and not in “off” mode.
Inspect the Pilot Light
For gas units, if your fireplace has a standing pilot, confirm it’s lit. If it’s out, follow the manufacturer’s relighting instructions exactly.
Clean Visible Dust
Lightly vacuum vents, control compartments, and around the unit to remove dust that can interfere with sensors or ignition.
